1. BENEATH (2013) - Daily Grindhouse
Apr 10, 2014 · It's a shame, as the plotting is actually fairly clever and could have easily been made into a solid film with better dialogue and an execution ...
Even if you don’t care for his films, it’s hard to question that Larry Fessenden is one of the most interesting genre filmmakers working today. Films like HABIT, NO TELLING, WENDIGO and THE LAST WINTER have taken genre film conventions and explored them with a more character-based and philosophical edge, providing a much-needed different take on classic horror tropes that are compelling, even when they’re not entirely successful. His work as a producer is a cut above the average fare in terms of ambition – STAKELAND, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, I SELL THE DEAD and THE INNKEEPERS all come from filmmakers who genuinely want to make something noteworthy. With this background, the made-for-Chiller BENEATH, his first film as a director since 2006’s LAST WINTER (save for an episode of the anthology “Fear Itself”), should have been a solid return to form. As NO TELLING was inspired by “Frankenstein” and LAST WINTER was a take on Carpenter’s THE THING, BENEATH is, on the surface, a film inspired by JAWS, the...

3. Beneath (2013) (Movie Review) | Bloody Good Horror
Jul 31, 2013 · In all honesty this movie has very little to offer in any department. The monster itself was at times effective visually because they actually ...
It seems that the first rule of monster movies is to have a visually striking monster. I think we can all harken back to our first viewing of “Jaws” or “Alien” and remember the shivers that it sent down our spine. One being the fear of sharks magnified and the other an original creation that we didn’t know we were afraid of until it was displayed on the big screen. Even when

6. Beneath movie review & film summary (2013) - Roger Ebert
Jul 15, 2013 · "Beneath" is similar to "Piranha 3D" in that its creators encourage viewers to roll their eyes at the movie's distressingly callow meat puppet ...
As a horror spoof, "Beneath" is and isn't what it looks like. If you've ever seen "Jaws," or "Friday the 13th," you are already familiar with the film's plot. The film's protagonists are usually more insufferable than not, but "Beneath" is a weirdly personal, and thoughtful generic exercise.

8. Film Review: 'Beneath' - Variety
Jul 17, 2013 · But “Beneath” opts to play things relatively straight as an ill-advised swimming session leads to the pic's first fatality, as well as the loss ...
Steven Spielberg’s sage decision to show the mechanical shark as little as possible in “Jaws” springs to mind with each successive glimpse of an incredibly fake-looking man-eating catfish in Larry Fessenden’s “Beneath.” Sporting the plasticine texture of an inflatable raft and a beady yellow eye that flits back and forth as if controlled by a […]
9. Beneath (2013) - Rotten Tomatoes
As a low-budget disaster thriller, the film works well enough - but it's the commitment the supernatural "question" that makes Beneath worth checking out.
Coal miners become trapped 600 feet below the surface. As the air grows toxic and time runs out, the crew descends into madness and turns on one another.
