LG G3, rumored to hit the stores in second half of this year may sport some very exciting features. The display resolution, screen size and rear camera in G3 could be better than LG’s flagship G2, which took the market with a storm. A frenzy for G3 upon its release is not unlikely, more so because LG G3 is reported to be water resistant and dust-proof.
If we give a look at the recently released Smartphones, we’d see how quickly resistance from water and dust-proofing have been becoming popular. Samsung Galaxy S4 Active and Sony Xperia Z are two high-end devices that are waterproof as well as dust resistant. Some low end phones have also been released in recent time, which are fully protected from dust and water. Sony introduced two such low end phones in 2012. These phones are Xperia Go and Xperia Acro S.
Users might wonder why LG needs to add water proofing and dust resistance features to G3, when the phone is already rumored to showcase some top notch specs such as 2K resolution, 16MP back camera and 3GB RAM. To understand this, we need to look at LG’s product lineup and flagship devices from its competitors.
If LG releases G3 in the second quarter of 2014 (presumably in May), its main competitor would be Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2. Both are waterproof and water resistant. To survive in the competition, G3 also needs to be at par with these devices in every area.
The chief concern of LG should be Sony’ being the flag bearer of introducing water and dust proof phones. Even Samsung had no other choice but making its Galaxy S5 dust and water resistant to stay in the compeition against Sony as the latter made dust and water proofing a de facto standard for all its phones outside Japan. LG G3 would be the first phone of this kind and thus, it may have gard time facing the competition if proofing quality is not high.
Resistance quality does matter. So does improvement in all other areas. Experts are unanimously of the opinion that water proofing alone couldn’t help a phone to make an impactful presence in the market. That’s because waterproof phones have some flip sides. Many of them have slow processors and their screen is not impressive enough. However, those issues are unlikely to bug G3 because it is rumored to release with LG’s Octa-core Odin processor and 5.5 inch screen with 2560 x 1440 display.
Truth is, waterproof and dust resistant phones have done well in market mostly in the pretext of ease of the consumer. It’s risky to handle a phone that doesn’t have resistance from dust dust and water. To save the phone from getting soaked, users would have to buy a case then. Water and dust proof phones save them from such hassle.

As processor, screen size and display in LG G3 would hopefully be up to the snuff to support water and dust resistance features, LG only needs to watch out protection level of its competitor phones i.e. Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2. S5 received IP67 certification that indicates the phone won’t get wet if water is up 1 meter and Xperia Z2 has IP55 and IP58 certification indicating the phone’s safety when water is up to 3 meters.
To excite users, LG G3 will either have to beat these standards or be at par with them. Please visit LG G5 Update blog for every update related to Lg upcoming smartphones.
